In Ultimate Frisbee, as a sideline teammate, you have a crucial role to play. What is this role and how can you be a better sideline teammate? We share more…

Based on the rules of the tournament, you would have for example, 7 players on-field per team at one time. But then there are substitutions after each point – these substitutes are the sideline teammates.

And so, you’re always in the game despite not being on the field actively participating in the game – yet you kind-of are, because your involvement and support contributes to the overall success and spirit of the team.

Here are some key roles and responsibilities of sideline teammates in Ultimate Frisbee:

1. Support & Encouragement:

Sideline teammates provide constant support, encouragement and motivation to their teammates on the field.

They cheer for successful plays, provide positive reinforcement and help maintain team morale during intense moments of the game keeping the spirit of the game intact.

Their energy and enthusiasm can uplift the players on the field and contribute to a cohesive team dynamic – an absolute essential for any successful team.

2. Communication & Observations:

The fact that sideline teammates stand on the sidelines, they also have the added benefit of a different perspective because of their position off the field.

They can observe the flow of the game, identify patterns or strategies used by the opposing team and communicate valuable information to their teammates on the field.

This can help players make more informed decisions and adjustments during the game.

3. Substitutions & Line Management:

Sideline teammates often assist in managing substitutions and line rotations.

They communicate with the players on the field, coordinate timing for substitutions and ensure smooth transitions between line changes.

It’s very easy for a player to over-do it and so this helps maintain player stamina, optimise player matchups and keep the team organised during gameplay.

4. Strategy Discussions & Timeouts:

During timeouts or breaks in the game, sideline teammates can engage in strategy discussions with the players on the field.

They can offer insights, suggest adjustments and provide input to enhance team tactics and decision-making, which at times may not be communicated with absolute clarity during a point – it’s an important opportunity.

5. Rule Observance & Calls:

Sideline teammates can help their teammates on the field by observing and discussing potential rule violations.

If they notice a potential violation, they can communicate it to the appropriate players on the field, allowing them to make informed calls or adjustments.

6. Spirit of the Game:

Taking the previous point further, sideline teammates contribute to maintaining the spirit of the game – keeping the game true.

They promote fair play, respect and good sportsmanship both within their team and towards the opposing team. They can lead by example, encouraging respectful interactions and resolving any conflicts or disputes in a calm and constructive manner.

So that’s how sideline teammates play an active role in supporting the team’s performance, communication and overall experience during an Ultimate Frisbee game.

Their involvement helps create a positive team environment, contributing to the success and enjoyment of the sport – and of course, helps to develop and maintain camaraderie.
