Engaging in sports can have a positive impact on children’s social skills and teamwork in several ways. What we also find is that sports creates an opportunity for this to happen without it being taught directly. The experience of a sport that values the spirit of the game (referring to Ultimate Frisbee – clearly!) is most apt in teaching the following:

1. Collaboration & Cooperation:

Ultimate Frisbee is a team sport and it requires children to work together as part of a team towards a common goal and so, they need to learn to collaborate, communicate and cooperate with their teammates by adapting to the needs of the team and the game.

Therefore, through interactions during practices and games, children develop essential social skills such as sharing, understanding, adjusting and supporting each other.

2. Communication:

Effective communication is vital in sports, both on and off the field – and in life. We’ve all experienced avoidable errors if only the communication existed, or had been clearer.

And so, with Ultimate Frisbee, children learn to communicate with their teammates, coaches and officials to convey ideas, strategies and instructions.

They develop skills to actively listen, to express themselves clearly and even understand non-verbal cues. Ultimate Frisbee provides children a platform to practice and refine their communication skills in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

In addition to this, personally, I have found the children also find it easier to communicate their issues and challenges to their coaches and their parents too. It becomes natural to express, to communicate.

3. Respect & Empathy:

We’re coaching and constantly sharing information about Ultimate Frisbee because it promotes the development of respect and empathy towards others – such as teammates, coaches, opponents and officials.

With the Spirit of the Game (SOTG) held highly in Ultimate, children get to learn the importance of treating others fairly and empathising with different perspectives.

Through sports, children develop a sense of sportsmanship, integrity, and consideration for others, which are crucial aspects of social interaction. The fact that Ultimate is a mixed gender, no-contact sport in itself creates an important first step in understanding the other gender and respecting boundaries too.

4. Conflict Resolution:

Ultimate Frisbee is a self-officiated sport, this means that for example, during a game when there is a conflict or a disagreement and a call is made – you as a player are now responsible to resolve the conflict upholding the rules and the spirit of the game – doing so allows you to respect the rules, the process and teaches acceptance.

Similarly, if conflict arises within a team, it’s the Spirit Captain, the coaches and even the rest of the teammates that are now responsible for upholding the ethos by helping to resolve conflicts constructively. And so children learn to navigate disagreements, find compromises and work towards mutually beneficial solutions.

5. Leadership & Followership:

Ultimate Frisbee allows children to experience both leadership and followership roles.

In our coaching sessions, we look to help children understand when to take initiative, guide others and make decisions as leaders within the team. Simultaneously, children also learn the importance of being a supportive and contributing follower, respecting the leadership of others.

By experiencing these roles, children develop a better understanding of leadership qualities, and eventually the intricacies of teamwork dynamics and effective followership.

6. Social Bonding & Camaraderie:

This is something I have touched upon in previous blog posts, but it’s worth sharing again that participating in a team sport, like Ultimate Frisbee, fosters social bonding and the development of friendships.

Children spend time with their teammates, sharing common goals, experiences, and challenges (seems like heavy stuff for kids, but they do have their own way of doing this) – which is why these shared experiences create a sense of camaraderie leading to the formation of positive social connections.

7. Cultural & Diversity Awareness:

Ultimate Frisbee, like other team sports, brings with it an opportunity to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Children learn to appreciate and embrace these differences, promoting cultural awareness and inclusivity. They develop the ability to work effectively with people from various backgrounds, helping them nurture tolerance, respect, and understanding.

8. Selflessness & Sacrifice:

There is value in selflessness and sacrificing personal interests for the benefit of the team and so to prioritise the team’s success over individual accomplishments – and celebrate it together is what Ultimate Frisbee allows for.

To help encourage a cooperative mindset and a willingness to contribute for the whole team (and the sport), promoting a strong sense of teamwork and social cohesion is what Ultimate Frisbee can help develop.

We have to remember that through sports, children naturally learn important social skills that extend beyond the playing field, benefiting their interactions in school, family and society.

It’s beautiful that by adding this sporting activity to a child’s routine can make such a big difference. It’s like you’re being trained to live a better life without actually teaching it directly.
